Who We Are

The Money Athlete®

What is TMA & who is a Money Athlete?

The Money Athlete® all started with an idea in 2014

ESPN 30 for 30 episodes “Broke” sparked the thought:

“Why don’t individuals train their money habits the same way athletes train their bodies to perform on the field?”

Whoever you are, wherever you come from, wherever you are in life, TMA will help you gain and train your money so that it grows on your way to being financially independent.

Why do people work so hard at school, athletics, jobs, etc., but don't work hard at their "money" and financial lifestyle?

  • Why do people work so hard at school, athletics, jobs, etc., yet don’t work hard at their “money” and financial lifestyle?
  • How come the majority of individuals do not understand basic economics such as credit scores, mortgage rates, budgeting, etc? These are critical to individual success.
  • Why don’t more people use tools like real estate, business, or the stock market to get rich?
  • What is it that keeps people in the 9-5 rat race their entire lives? Do they even know how to get out?

The original plan

Originally focused on financial literacy for pro athletes, TMA was born in 2015 with 5 Ohio State student athletes who set out to teach athletes about money and keeping their financial minds in tip top shape, like their bodies.

After a few years of producing content on Instagram, the team disbanded and the brand sat dormant for several years.

In 2018, founding member, Brian, after seeing the endless amount of mediocre at best financial advice online and in social media decided that TMA would be a Financial Empowerment brand teaching individuals to become financially free, unlock life changing opportunities, and break out of the endless 9-5 drudgery.

TMA is no longer just for athletes, it is a lifestyle brand meant to change everyone’s lives, everyone who wants to unlock their own potential.

TMA makes it EASY to understand that there is no magic or luck behind being wealthy, owning a vacation home, buying your dream car, or retiring at age 40…all it takes is the knowledge, persistence, and work over time to achieve your wildest financial goals.

About TMA

The Scout

The Money Athlete (TMA) began in 2015 with the goal to teach athletes how to get their personal finances in shape, just like they keep their bodies in shape for the big game. Athletes are driven by the desire to be the best, so why not bring that drive into their personal life by helping them achieve their financial goals side by side with their athletic goals? By doing so, this would ensure athletes of all levels would be equipped with the tools they need to be financially successful even after their athletic career came to an end, thus changing the common tragic outcome of bankruptcy for most post-career athletes.

The Gameplan

In all three major sports leagues, the percentage of athletes that declare bankruptcy within ten years of retirement is close to 50%. TMA took input from both professional and student athletes to create the most effective financial literacy program. Financial “conditioning” began with five Ohio State student athletes teaching other athletes about all things money, bringing their teammates up to speed on financial literacy. These athletes were determined to not be another contributor to that 50%.

The Kickoff

TMA quickly became the financial lifestyle brand for many Ohio State athletes through its online education. It created a platform for athletes to discuss a topic that wasn’t naturally engrained in their day-to-day conversation. TMA made it easy to understand a typically misunderstood, and very important, subject. But why should this tool only be for athletes?

The Audible

In 2018, TMA decided to change the game. Readily available online financial advice is mediocre at best, and TMA knew they needed to reach more than just athletes. TMA turned into a Financial Empowerment brand, educating all individuals on how to become financially free, allowing people to unlock lifechanging opportunities and break out of the endless 9 – 5 slump.

The Final Score

Today, The Money Athlete is 100% female owned and makes financial literacy accessible to all. TMA makes it easy to understand that there is no magic wand or good luck charm behind being wealthy. YOU can drive that dream car, buy those designer shoes, own the vacation home, eat at the Michelin restaurant, retire at 40…you just have to be in the know, and TMA will get you there.

Ready for financial independence? Ready to dominate your finances and not stress about money again? Become a Money Athlete, your future self will thank you.

CAROLINE FORREST

After living in Columbus, OH my entire life, I decided to move to Los Angeles in 2021 to continue my career in advertising sales. It became apparent quite quickly how much higher the cost of living is out in California compared to Ohio. It was imperative to start monitoring my finances in order to continue to do the things I love in a city where everything is more expensive- fitness classes, going out to nice restaurants, enjoying a good glass of wine, and traveling. Along with ensuring my current financial freedom, it is also important for me to secure my future financial freedom. I will do anything to help reduce stress in my life, and monitoring my finances now will help reduce the future stress of providing for my family. As a Money Athlete, I understand how to create financial freedom now, while also preparing for my future.

ADAM ESKER

I was not always the prime example of a Money Athlete- ask me about 15 years ago, and I would have told you that “I didn’t care about being broke” as long as I could go out on Friday & Saturday nights, drive a nice car, and buy “whatever I wanted, when I wanted”.

Fast forward to today, and I am obsessed with getting out of the 9-5 rat race, using money to make more money, investing in real estate & the stock market, and teaching others how to do the same.

Self Financial EMPOWERMENT is the only way to achieve your life goals.

My goals are teaching 1 million young people how to become financially free, establishing a non-profit to take inner-city children to the National Parks, leaving my son and his family a better world, and buying and flying my own private jet- a GulfStream 5.

Catch me on the Inside Track Podcast or on the Moneygram Blog- lets crush it together!

NICK LOUGH

Growing up I loved hanging out with friends, traveling, and playing golf. However, financial literacy was not a priority for me at the time. As I got older, I realized the importance of taking control of my finances and creating a strong financial future for myself. Moving forward, my goal is to learn everything I can about personal finance and investing to become a self-made “Money Athlete”. Despite my love for the fun aspects of life, I learned that financial stability and freedom are crucial for true happiness and security. Now, I not only live a financially secure life but also enjoy sharing my knowledge with others and helping them achieve their own financial goals.

If you want to take control of your financial future you are in the right place!

BILLY BRUNDAGE

As someone who is passionate about financial literacy and philanthropy, I believe that by combining these two critical aspects of life, we can shape a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.

When I was younger, I didn’t worry too much about my finances and was more concerned about having fun in the moment. I assumed that financial stability would come with a higher paying job later in life. However, I soon realized this was not the case and that I would need to make a change in order to achieve my long-term goals. I have since learned that financial literacy gives us the tools to take control of our financial future and make informed decisions about money, leading to financial stability, independence, peace of mind, and an elevated quality of life.

Additionally, financial literacy helps me maximize my financial resources, allowing me to make a greater impact on the causes and charities that I support.

I encourage everyone reading this to take their first step today towards becoming a ‘money athlete’ and taking control of their finances, creating a better future for themselves, their family, and future generations.

GRISHAM BLAKE

During my college years at Columbia, I had almost no disposable income to spend on anything (I once scoured the sidewalks for coins to buy a book… yes I know how crazy that sounds). I was lucky enough to find a good mentor after a few years who explained to me the importance of establishing a line of credit, paying my bills on time, and investing my money into basic things, which allowed me a lot more freedom to do what I really wanted! We’re starting The Money Athlete so that everyone can have access to that kind of guidance – not everybody can train their bodies and minds the way pro athletes do, but I really believe that EVERYONE can train their wallets and their investments to work FOR them!

KATO MITCHELL

My name is Kato Mitchell, a shoe customizer by day a financial literacy coach by night. I played football at The Ohio State University and had hopes of making it to the NFL to become financially empowered but I wasn’t good enough so I had to find other ways to make ends meet. I went through a couple different things until I fell upon my passion of painting shoes/cleats and creating my own business and starting my path for financial independence. Once I started this I realized how having the right people in your corner and learning ways to save and make money while making money can give me more time to spend with my son and help mentor other kids! The Money Athlete helped me get that time so instead of spending 8-14 hours working a day I can work whenever I want on whatever I want because I have the time and money on my side.
